The Works and Days (of Tayoko Shiojiri in the Shiotani Basin) plot
Junji and Tayoko are already elderly, but the two work faithfully and disciplined in their garden and house in the sparsely populated hills near the city of Kyoto. This almost complete registration of Japanese rural life outlines their worries in thousands of short scenes and recordings. The giant radishes must be harvested, the weeds pulled, the bushes pruned. Other things that fill their days are maintaining the cemetery, watching a soap opera or sports game on television, eating and chatting with friends. And also, unfortunately more often, hospital visits.
