The State against Mandela and the Others plot
There were no cameras in the courtroom when Nelson Mandela and nine other defendants were sentenced to life in prison in 1964. There was always a sound recorder with him. Directors Nicolas Champeaux and Gilles Porte saw the untapped potential of those 256 hours of audio and used it to look back at the time of apartheid. The interrogations are not only reinforced by animations in grey, sometimes abstract chalk sketches, but also by interviews with those directly involved, who relive the infamous Rivonia process through headphones.
