The Price of Sugar plot

Five landowners dominate the sugarcane industry of the Dominican Republic. Known to tourists as a beach paradise, the island is the gathering place for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants from neighboring Haiti, who cut sugar cane barefoot and by hand in the interior day after day. Often lured with empty promises, they lose all rights as illegal after arrival. The result is a modern form of slavery. Men and women, crammed into shacks without running water or medical facilities, are exploited under armed surveillance. The Spanish priest Christopher Hartley, descendant of a wealthy family, has been committed to the well-being of neglected workers for decades. He arranges visits to American doctors, welcomes the poor to his church, and organizes a first strike that appears to have slightly improved the situation. The Dominican population is turned against him by those in power through payment, but Hartley persists.
