The Legend of the Ugly King plot
They called him the "Ugly King". A myth, a hero, a movie legend. Who was Yilmaz Güney? A talented director? A revolutionary? A murderer, a genius or madman? In this documentary, the director Hüseyin Tabak looks for answers in a script about the Kurdish filmmaker from Turkey. Güney was sentenced to 100 years in prison for political reasons but also for the murder of a judge. He started with movies from prison. His most famous film 'Yol' won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982. Tobacco visits countries where Güney's family lives, his actors, prestigious filmmakers such as Michael Haneke and Costa Gavras, former prisoners and ordinary people for whom Güney is still a hero. The deeper Tobacco digs, the more the legendary "Ugly King" appears human and vulnerable.
