The Last Dogs of Winter plot
During polar bear season in Churchill, Manitoba, Canada, visitors have the chance to see a special scene: polar bears roaming among countless chained dogs. These tourists see not one, but two endangered species. The Canadian Eskimo Dog, or Qimmiq, was once the indispensable helper of itinerant Eskimos, but nearly died out from neglect and active extermination. In 1950 there were about 25 thousand dogs, in 1970 there were only a hundred left. Since 1976, the breed has been maintained by a handful of people, including the protagonist of this film, Brian Ladoon - a true phenomenon. This former deckhand developed a passion for the only dog species that survives at sixty degrees below zero.
