The Hamlet Syndrome plot
"To be or not to be in Ukraine"
A few months before Russia invades Ukraine in 2022, filmmakers Elwira Niewara and Piotr Rosolowksi brought Ukrainian theater director Roza Sarkisian and five young compatriots together in an atmospheric theater to create a performance in which Shakespeare's Hamlet and their reality come together. Like Hamlet, Yaroslav, Kateryna, Rodion, Oksana and Roman were also faced with major existential dilemmas. “To live or not to live”, Yaroslav varies on the Shakespearean “to be or not to be”, because of his physical – and near-fatal – involvement in the 2014 struggle in the Donbas region.
