The City of the Dead plot
Cairo has a huge cemetery, El Arafa, where a kind of city has arisen between the tombs and mausoleums. One million people live in what is known as the 'city of the dead'. Many funerals take place every day, while a young shepherd herds his cattle through the streets, a market woman tries to sell her plastic laundry baskets and children fly kites between the tombstones. Nothing but respect for the dead, but also striking sobriety, because in “The City of the Dead” life and death have made a peaceful pact. In his carefully framed documentary, Sérgio Tréfaut shows different facets of this wonderful enclave.
