In view of the tragic passing of Glen Hansard.
The story is peculiar—of the 'how on earth did they get that into your head' kind of kind. It is somewhat of a shame that a bit of common sense gets involved and the men take a shortcut, although that does lead to some beautiful encounters. Still, I found the documentary a bit unengaging in the first half, somewhat aimless. That seems to change slightly when Hansard takes over from one of the original four, already about an hour in—more focus in the footage, perhaps more of an idea of what it is actually supposed to be about, although also much more of a (yawn!) traditional documentary.
But then comes the resolution of the story, and that fully confirms for me how Hansard managed to make his earlier films so special. I won't give it away or give it away; just watch it for yourself. And then after that, then comes the ending, the aftermath.
It is always difficult to judge something like that from a few appearances in a film, but Glen Hansard has always come across to me as someone who is above all exactly himself—and therefore perhaps a person I wouldn't get along with very well in real life. But the films he stars in, or for which he has worked on the music or the story, are without exception fine and more than that, thanks to his leading roles in them. And that is perhaps simply the other side of the same coin.
RIP, and strength to his wife and, especially, remembering his young son.
