The Big Durian plot
This docudrama describes a horrific incident in Malaysia in October 1987, when a soldier walked into a hotel with an M16 and started shooting around. This multilingual semi-documentary takes a look at local Malaysian politics for the first time, covering important topics such as race, religion, youth, the media and even the pop music of the 1980s. Twenty-three people are approached in the film, some of which are real. Others pretend, but they all add to the mystery of the atrocity of the soldier, Private Adam. In the film, which is structured like a thriller, the interviewees tell little by little about the mysterious event, saying much more about society than about the incident itself.
