The Band plot
16-year-old Danny, the filmmaker's son, is going through an important phase in his life. Falling in love for the first time, he learns to express himself among his friends in the Decatur High Marching Band, the 120-member school band he plays in. We hear about the death of his older brother Michael, now nine years ago, and the impact this terrible event has had on his life. Father David Zeiger observes his son and some of his friends for a year and sees how, despite all the problems this time brings, they grow from child to young adult. There's Mary Ellen, who is gradually overcoming her anorexia, and Kate and Cameron, who grew up on fashionable drugs like Ritalin and Prozac. Together they form a portrait of the younger generation in the United States on the brink of the millennium.
