The Zazaic-Kurdish filmmaker, writer and actor Yilmaz Güney has directed his greatest films from Turkish prisons. In order not to end up behind bars forever, he fled his homeland in 1981, hoping to one day be able to return to freedom. “Ballad of Exiles Yilmaz Güney” (2016) highlights Güney's last years, which he spent as an exile in Paris. What he had experienced in captivity - in particular an uprising in the children's ward of the Ulucanlar prison in Ankara - he incorporated into the film “The Wall” (1983). The penal institution, which he himself compared to a social laboratory, was revived not only materially, but also in spirit in a former monastery. Members of the cast and crew, most of them fled from Turkey themselves, talk about the intensive shooting period, their memories of Yilmaz Güney, their life in exile and art as a refuge.
