Portrait of Rebiya Kadeer. She once symbolized China's economic success. Coming from a poverty-stricken family, she worked her way up to the top ten richest Chinese. The government gave her a place of honor at the International Women's Conference held in Beijing in 1995. But Rebiya was not only very successful, she is also a Uyghur woman. For the Chinese, the living area of the Muslim Uyghurs is particularly interesting because there are large oil and gas reserves. When Rebiya is allowed to address the Chinese People's Congress, she decides to throw the bat in the henhouse. She denounces the influx of Han migrants into Xinjiang who are causing the Uyghurs to lose their jobs and culture. Rebiya is locked up. Six years later, more dead than alive, she is allowed to leave prison and go to the United States. From there she fights for the human rights of the Uyghurs.
