Taimagura Baachan plot
They are very elderly, but the Japanese couple Masayo and Kumezo Mukaido still work just as hard as when they were young. Their mountain village of Taimagura, in northern Japan, is covered with snow for part of the year, which does not make life any easier. For the cheerful grandmother and her husband, the weather conditions are no obstacle to continuing their work. They grind soybeans by foot to make miso, chop wood and process the harvested potatoes. Black-and-white archive images of the mountain village and reflections on life by grandfather and grandmother alternate the 16mm recordings of the heavy agricultural labour. Then the inevitable happens: he dies. Grandma Masayo is now on her own...
