"I write because there is a voice in me that wants to be heard," writes the American poet Sylvia Plath when she is fifteen. Tragically, she silences that voice in 1963, when she takes her own life at the age of 30. For Plath, the postwar American dream is a prison, not a paradise. She grows up in the age of Cold War witch hunts and conservative values. For smart, ambitious girls, 1950s America is stifling. While Plath wants to fully develop her talent and discover and conquer the world, she is restricted in all areas.
