Sugarcane plot

A weathered Virgin and Child looks out over the landscape of the nearby Sugarcane Reserve at Williams Lake, Canada. This was the site of St. Joseph’s Mission, one of a series of Catholic boarding schools where Native American children were re-educated to become “good” North American citizens. Unmarked graves, discovered in 2021, were the first evidence of a long-hidden history of sexual and physical abuse and the disappearance of babies and children. A national investigation is underway.

In 1894, the Canadian government decided to force Indigenous children into segregated boarding schools “to get rid of the Indian problem.” After a mass grave is discovered at one of the boarding schools, Charlene Belleau and Whitney Spearing investigate what happened to the Indigenous children who attended St. Joseph Mission. Willie Sellars is Chief of Williams Lake First Nation, and his family history is marked by the long-hidden, horrific events at the boarding schools, which were often run by Catholic dignitaries. Former Chief (and survivor) Rick Gilbert investigates his own family history as part of a delegation that will soon travel to the Vatican to meet with the Pope. It beats around the bush for a long time, but the eventual revelations are shocking and the impact of the events is painfully visible.
