Shingal, Where Are You? plot
In 2014, the northern Iraqi Yazidi city of Shingal was captured and destroyed by IS. The terror group killed thousands of men and kidnapped 3,000 women and girls, who are still held captive as slaves. Thousands of displaced Yazidis remain in an abandoned coal mine on the Turkish border, waiting for a safe return. The images illustrate the various concerns and considerations of this hunted religious minority through the eyes of an older man, a teenage boy and a family in turn. Lounging around the ruins and fishing waters around the shelter, children discuss shockingly grown-up topics, such as the likelihood of another genocide taking place next, and how much better it would be in Europe.
