Seeing Is Believing: Handicams, Human Rights and the News plot

They were intended for recording weddings and holidays, but possessed unsuspected powers. Handy video cameras - first introduced to the consumer market in the mid-1980s - have profoundly changed the media landscape. That became mercilessly clear after the attacks on the World Trade Center: never before had so much footage of a disaster been available. All over New York, amateur videographers had captured the events. Without images, the news no longer has any eloquence. Famine or war in distant lands only comes to the fore when the misery is visible; many development workers therefore see the video camera as an indispensable tool. This documentary shows how much the camera has acquired a political and social function.
