"The Untold Story of the Godfather of Rap"

Umar Bin Hassan is not yet seventy, but walks with difficulty and his eyes betray sadness and fatigue. As a member of The Last Poets, a group of performance poets who expressed the progressive zeitgeist from the late 1960s, he was a major influence on later hip-hop artists. In one of his most famous lyrics, Niggers Are Scared of Revolution, he criticizes the destructive macho behavior of his black brothers. The film mainly focuses on the personal life of Hassan, who still struggles with demons. Growing up in poverty and having an abusive, erratic father gave him an inferiority complex. In the course of his own adult life, he leaves a sad trail of broken relationships and children without a father figure, with a serious crack addiction as a sad low.
