On June 18, 1983, Sally Ride went down in history as the first American woman in space. This documentary reminds us of the structural sexism within NASA and the media. Sally and her five female colleagues changed the minds of the men they worked with by passing the same tests. Sensational archive footage of press conferences shows that the media had not yet reached that point. But Sally felt compelled to hide an important aspect of her life from the outside world. That aspect gives this documentary a double meaning. Not very adventurous in form, but current and fascinating, even for those with little interest in space travel. The most memorable contribution comes from Mike Mullane, a colleague who described himself in 1978 as a 'male chauvinist pig'.

What a fantastically beautiful person.

In every frame of this documentary about Sally Ride, her eyes sparkle, as if she's just told the best joke ever, as if she's pursuing what she's always dreamed of, as if she's found ultimate happiness. And perhaps all three were true. How tragic, on the other hand, that she never felt free to express herself. And on the other hand, no one is obligated to society to come out, and not everyone feels the need to make a grand gesture and a public event about it. What is, in any case, incredibly wonderful is that she found her partner despite the lack of freedom at that time, and lived an almost fairytale-like happily ever after with them.

The documentary's style isn't particularly exciting, primarily featuring archive footage and talking heads. But for this subject, that's perfectly fitting, and perhaps even better than a different approach. It's simply wonderful to watch that archive footage and see Sally fulfill her dream. And then you naturally become curious about her surroundings, and it's an almost equally great pleasure to see her sister and her boyfriend visit. It's a shame they didn't grow very, very old together.
