Reis door de Leegte plot
Director René Roelofs emigrated to Australia in 1982. The country has about as many inhabitants as the Netherlands, but is two hundred and fifty times as large. Roelofs was lured by the good stories about the film industry, the vast ruggedness and the beautiful weather. But in 1988 he returned; he missed his Dutch roots and never felt quite at home with the Australian 'don't worry, mate' mentality. Yet the step back, from a house on the Indian Ocean to a flat in Amsterdam-Osdorp, turned out not to be easy. Doubt struck, especially during long winter evenings. In 2002 Roelofs returned to Australia for the first time. He took the train from Sydney to Perth, across the immense void. In search of a definitive answer to the question of whether he had made the right decision in 1988.
