Racetrack plot
In Racetrack, Frederick Wiseman points his camera at life in and around Belmont Park, the world's premier thoroughbred racecourse. Racetrack begins with the birth of a thoroughbred horse and ends with the empty, trash-strewn grandstand after the legendary 1981 Belmont Stakes where favorite Pleasant Colony suffers a grievous loss. Wiseman shows the racecourse as an introverted microcosm. He follows trainers, jockeys, managers, caretakers, vets and grooms in their work. He shows how horseshoes are replaced and mares mated, the presentation of horses before the race, union meetings and betting on results.
