Pray for Our Sinners plot

Filmmaker Sinéad O'Shea returns to her birthplace of Navan to investigate Ireland's recent, often-hidden past. The film reveals how the Catholic Church profoundly impacted daily life, from education to family life. Before the legalization of abortion in 2018, unmarried pregnant women were marginalized. The Church dictated morality, and protest was rare.

How is it possible that Catholic priests in Ireland could systematically and persistently engage in what we now consider transgressive behavior? Journalist and filmmaker O'Shea opens with an exposition of the national history and explains why the country was de facto ruled by the Catholic Church. The punishments imposed on children for not knowing their (religious) homework were widely accepted, and anyone who spoke out against the mores of the church could count on resistance. O'Shea speaks to children from that time in her hometown and substantiates their stories using archival footage, including that of the charismatic Father Ferrell, about whom opinions remain divided.
