"A meditation on love, life, death and the human voice."

Why and how do singers find 'emotion' in their voice? This question, once posed by Roland Barthes, became the leitmotif for Schroeter's film. There was no preconceived screenplay underlying the film. There were, however, precise restrictions: the set (Royaumont Abbey), the city (Düsseldorf) and the chosen participants. Each singer was on set for two days, accompanied by a person of his or her choice (boyfriend, lover, child, etc.), working on an aria chosen by the filmmaker.
