There But for Fortune is a timeless tribute to an unlikely American hero, folk singer Phil Ochs. His musical career spanned two turbulent decades in which he enjoyed great fame, but also sought social justice. A contradiction that eventually tore him apart inwardly. From youthful idealism to unprecedented pessimism, Ochs' life ran parallel to the events of the time. The anger, satire and righteous indignation that inspired his music drove him personally to deep despair. In this documentary, Ochs is brought back to life through interviews, live footage and conversations with the likes of Joan Baez, Tom Hayden, Pete Seeger, Sean Penn, Peter Yarrow, Christopher Hitchens, Ed Sanders and many others.
