Paragate plot

With the help of a smartphone and camera, Jialai Wang maintains contact with her mother and grandmother in China from Belgium. When grandmother's health deteriorates, she returns to Shanghai. Upon arrival, Grandma has just died and Jialai is left alone with her mother. This woman, a devout Buddhist, seems to pay more attention to her daily prayers, her Maoist past and her dog Dongdong, than to her daughter. She herself had been abandoned as a child by her own recently deceased mother, when she divorced Jialai's grandfather and moved to the city.
