"The band that was punk before punk even existed," says Dr. Feelgood described in Oil City Confidential, a stylized portrait of this British pub rock band. The band members grew up in the south east of England on Canvey Island, which is dominated by the petrochemical industry. dr. Feelgood stands out for uncompromising rock, cropped cuts and cheap suits at a time dominated by the thoughtful sound of bands like Pink Floyd. Director Julien Temple describes the rise and fall of the band in the tradition of the film noir. Interviews with band members are interspersed with members of The Clash, Blondie and The Sex Pistols. In his portrait Temple makes associative use of archive material and fragments from classic black-and-white films.
