Now Is the Past – My Father, Java & the Phantom Films plot

Chounosuke Ise, a Japanese film editor, made many propaganda films in Japanese-occupied Indonesia during WWII. The purpose of the films was to justify Japanese hegemony in Asia: Japan claimed to liberate the countries from colonialism. His son, filmmaker Shin-ichi Ise, follows the path of his father, who barely revealed anything about the war or Indonesia and apparently didn't want to talk about what he had done there. His journey takes him past the forced-labor film studios in Jakarta, past eyewitnesses who remember the misdeeds of the Japanese military police, and women fleeing rapists at the time.
