No Smoking in Sarajevo plot
Through the stories of the first three members Sejo Sexon, Nele Karajlic and Zenit Đozić we get to know the history of this famous Yugoslav rock band; Zabranjeno Pušenje ('no smoking' in Bosnian). Their story symbolizes what has happened in Yugoslavia over the past 30 years. The documentary contains archival footage and tells important stories that help us understand the zeitgeist in which the New Primitivism movement was founded; from 1983, this subcultural movement conveyed its message through music, skits and witty dialogues on radio and television. They were always openly critical, sharp and entertaining. With critical humor she managed to put her finger on the sore spot of Yugoslav society, where the subject was usually the small, ordinary Bosnian man.
