No Magic for Socialists plot

The West has recently associated Myanmar with political oppression and natural disasters, but little is known about the country’s film history. In “No Magic for Socialists,” Burmese artist Htoo Lwin Myo explores one of the most delightful chapters in that history. The special-effects horror and fantasy spectacles of the 1950s and early 1960s were essentially banned after the military coup in 1962. The Socialist Party felt that such superstitious stories did not fit into the new ideological system.
