Paval Talankin is an elementary school teacher in Karabash, a severely polluted industrial town in the Urals with a population of around 10,000. He is also the school photographer, and his office is always open to students. Everything changes when Russia invades Ukraine. Knowing that he will eventually have to leave his country (and his mother) for good because of his actions, he decides to archive the changes at school and the video footage he records (often at the government's behest) and share it with the outside world. Talankin approaches this serious and disturbing subject with a lighthearted tone and a self-deprecating humor reminiscent of Michael Moore's best work, making it as interesting as it is amusing.

Indoctrination through faith or indoctrination through an educational system? It doesn't really matter. What a child is taught as "truth" becomes deeply ingrained in their being, actions, and behavior as a person. A sense of belonging is emphasized in conjunction with so-called patriotism. This is always accompanied by ceremonial display and flag-waving. The connection to Hitler Youth and communist youth groups from the GDR and the Stalin era is quickly made. The about-face shown here by Talankin once again demonstrates the sick thinking of autocrats, creating a truth that prohibits free thought. It's heartbreaking to see how the children's facial expressions change... Well filmed. 4.2*

Incredibly well-made documentary. That you could pull this off within a dictatorship. Of course, the filmmaker had the perfect cover, but it's still incredibly courageous to make this film. A glimpse behind the curtain of a deeply disturbing state. Where children are being driven insane by war propaganda. And by the way, the teacher is also very creepy. A man who seems to believe the military rhetoric himself.

So, you also realize that the filmmaker, Pavel, must have had some kind of story for his documentary that the people in the film didn't know about. One time, children shout after him, "What are you filming for?" And Pavel replies, "The BBC," haha. Balls of steel, this man. A true hero, who had to leave Russia.

And so you know that an authoritarian regime always collapses as long as smarter people can flee. But how and whether Russia will ever return to a somewhat functioning democratic constitutional state, well... This country isn't exactly short on finches.
