Margaret Thatcher is the only female British Prime Minister to date, and the only Prime Minister to be elected three times and in power for 11 years (1979-1990). The Iron Lady was one of the most admired and hated politicians of her time. But her 'fall' happened at lightning speed. Her popularity with the public had fallen to an all-time low and she collided head-on with her entourage. The result was a kind of Greek tragedy or 'matricide': in no time she was pushed aside by her cabinet and collaborators.
