Maayo Wonaa Keerol (Le Fleuve N'Est Pas une Frontière) plot

The Senegal River forms the border between Mauritania and Senegal. In 1989 a war broke out between the two countries near and around this river. This led to atrocities on both sides. The Senegalese filmmaker Alassane Diago (1985) was still small at the time. Now he brings together victims and eyewitnesses of the massacre, his 'Senegalese and Mauritanian family', to let them talk in detail about their traumatic experiences. He wants to find out the truth and bring about reconciliation. Why did they slaughter each other and so many people were 'deported'? Was there systemic racism among the white and Arab elite? Was it about ethnic cleansing?
