The General Motors of housing, that's what Lustron was called in its heyday. This film about the successful rise and fall of this builder of standard steel and ceramic houses starts in 1947. In that reconstruction year, Carl Strandlund sets up the marketing and production of the Lustron House (the house America's been waiting for) in no time during that reconstruction year. With substantial financial support from the American government, which wanted affordable housing for war veterans. Strandlund had model houses built in the centers of several major American cities. The media success that followed generated enormous consumer interest. The Lustron House became the 'talk of the country' and thus a magnet for power and money. After only three successful years, Lustron went bankrupt. What remains are just under two thousand Lustron homes and a fanatical group of fans that - as yet in vain - argue for a nationally protected (heritage) status of their wonder home.
