Louis Doedel plot
The Surinamese trade union leader Louis Doedel stood up for the unemployed and small farmers during the crisis period of the 1930s. He organized demonstrations and protests in which thousands of people took part. Doedel's activities were perceived as such threatening by the colonial regime that in 1937 he was imprisoned in a psychiatric institution. Doedel was only released from the institution 43 years later. Few Dutch people know about Doedel's tragic life story. The documentary follows the search of the Surinamese woman Nina Jurna living in the Netherlands for the history of her great-uncle, for the role of her homeland in colonial times, and thus also for her own roots.
