Leaving Mandela Park plot
A kaleidoscopic documentary about the townships in South Africa, where we follow the stories of children with a special drive to escape from their gray daily reality with the help of music and dance. Siseko flees the house to escape abuse and wants to become a famous opera singer. Cynthia lives where gangs shoot at each other, but can escape this by playing her saxophone. The shepherd boy Siswe moves to the city in hopes of being admitted to university. Gauva ran away from his mother as a small child and is determined to do something with his singing talent. Pinkie studies hard to realize her dream of a stone house and dances to make life easier. Their dreams are not isolated. They are a metaphor for the hopeful future of a country trying to work itself out of a quagmire of poverty and violence.
