Layu sebelum Berkembang plot
Nearly seventy years after Indonesia's independence and ten years after the first popular president came to power, the educational system is increasingly governed by Islamic values. In this observational documentary, two girls and their families are followed during a crucial period in their school career: the last year of the public primary school in the city of Jogjakarta. Dila and Kiki are modern city girls from a middle class background: they listen to pop music, worry about their appearance and giggle about girly things. Although Islam is not a state religion, the influence of the faith on the once secular school system is growing. When the final exam is approaching, everything suddenly becomes serious, both for the parents and for the children. Much depends on the score for this exam, as the popular schools in the city only accept the children with the highest grades.
