Documentary about French director Jacques Demy filmed by his wife Agnès Varda. Jacques Demy (1931-1990) studied at the art academy of Nantes. After making his debut in the film world with a number of excellent short films, he delivered his first full-length film with Lola (1961). Of his subsequent films, Les umbrellaies de Cherbourg (1964) (with a leading role by Cathérine Deneuve) from 1964 was a great success. Enjoyable documentary made by Agnes Varda, herself a filmmaker and widow of Demy. It has a rather anecdotal character, not a strict chronology or anything, but that's very ok to get a closer look at the man's work in this way. What is not discussed is the hidden (bi)sexuality of the man. That is something he apparently struggled with and which has had an impact on his life. In 1990, for example, it was announced at his death that he had died of cancer. In 2008, however, his widow announced that AIDS was the real cause of death. But that was not allowed by Demy - it was also a time when this disease had a certain connotation - to go out into the outside world.

In the meantime I have seen almost all his films and also several documentaries about Jacques Demy. In one way or another his work continues to fascinate me and invite me to reconsider. Somewhere in the documentary it is nicely expressed by someone who states that Demy has never left his childhood behind, so to speak. Although that works better for some movies than others. He also has quite a bit of work in which the harsh reality is discussed, but there is always such a special out of this world side to it.
