Although the former French colonies in Central and West Africa have been independent since 1960, most of those countries still use the currency of the former oppressor: the CFA franc. At the time, the currency was pegged in value to the French franc, and monetary policy was set by the National Bank in Paris. The currency is now linked to the euro. The peg to the European currency has a major influence on the monetary policy of the CFA countries. And so the value of this currency is determined by political decisions elsewhere, rather than by the domestic economy.
