It was only at the end of the 19th century, after 350 years of colonization, that attention was paid to the culture of the Dutch East Indies, in the wake of the international trend toward non-Western cultures in response to the Industrial Revolution. Consequently, around 1900, Dutch artists adopted the batik technique. Frans Leidelmeijer, an expert on early twentieth-century styles such as Nieuwe Kunst, the Dutch variant of Art Nouveau, the Amsterdam School, Art Deco, Nieuwe Bouwen (New Building), and the Dutch East Indies architectural style, takes us on a journey through striking examples of this history in Java, Sumatra, and the Netherlands.
