Exactly five hundred years separate us from him. In those five hundred years he has fallen into oblivion. And if he is mentioned, he is associated with the well-known clichés: a humorless spoilsport that has spawned a Christianity full of self-torture. But who was John Calvin really? What were his motives, where did his inspiration come from to develop the doctrine that we later came to call Calvinism. And how is it that this teaching has had such a profound influence all over the world to this day? Werner Köhne and André Schäfer try to reconstruct Calvin's eventful life. With actor Julian Mehne as Calvin, the film makers trace the corridors of the restless Calvin and the viewer is taken to places such as Noyon, Orléans, Paris, Geneva and Zurich. Who is God and where is God and what role does He play in this world? Calvin tried to find an answer to such questions. He did so with a radicalism that can confuse and fascinate us to this day.
