Jean Rhys - En de Vrouw Is een Vreemde plot

The writer Jean Rhys was born in 1890 on the Caribbean island of Dominica. As a teenager she left for England where she earned a living as a dancer and ended up on the brink of prostitution. In the 1930s she moved to Paris, where the writers of The Lost Generation determined the literary climate. During that time she published her first stories and novels in which she wrote openly about the seamy side of existence, sexuality, abortion, failed relationships, drink and loneliness. It was not until after the Second World War, when Rhys lived withdrawn in a village in Devon, England, that the novel that would make her famous: “Wide Sargasso Sea” was published. In this she returns to Dominica, the paradise of her youth.
