It's Never Over, Jeff Buckley plot

On May 29, 1997, Jeff Buckley died at the age of only 30. Filmmaker Amy Berg gained access to Buckley's private archive and the cooperation of his mother, Mary Guibert, his musical partners, and friends. The result is a documentary that, through voicemails, diary entries, and rarely seen footage, sketches the contours of an artist who released only one studio album during his lifetime, but posthumously became a cult icon.

A standard documentary about singer/songwriter Jeff Buckley, who, despite his impressive and critically acclaimed debut album "Grace" (featuring his famous cover of Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah"), struggled to emerge from the shadow of his father, Thomas, who left him to pursue a musical career and died young. Jeff's mother, friends, musicians, and others involved in the tormented Jeff's personal and professional life paint a picture that offers no great surprises to those who have followed Buckley's career. Archival footage provides the most striking moments, and this certainly invites you to (re)discover Jeff Buckley's music.

A fine documentary that, with a few talking heads—primarily Jeff’s mother and a few (ex-)girlfriends—and an artistic mix of images, tells the story of the life and work of Jeff Buckley (son of Tim Buckley), who emerged as a new star on the (alternative) rock scene in the early 90s. His voice bears a strong resemblance to his father’s, and his music—an eclectic mix of experimental rock, folk, and jazz—surprisingly does too, even though Jeff doesn’t want to hear it because he is an idiosyncratic artist (just like his father, then) and cannot be pigeonholed. His musical influences are incredibly broad, ranging from Led Zeppelin to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and from Siouxsie Sioux to Nina Simone. Although his somewhat feminine or refined appearance and music make him seem the opposite of the rough grunge craze of the time, he was also a fan of Soundgarden (and friends with Chris Cornell) and reminds one of Kurt Cobain in his aversion to fame and personal struggles. Jeff was said to be manic-depressive, and after his acclaimed debut album Grace (1994), released a few months after Cobain's death, the second album was slow to materialize. Just when he was doing better, or rather when he was manic again instead of depressed, he drowned accidentally. Artist tragedy seems hereditary, for even with his early death, he followed in his father's footsteps, no matter how hard he tried not to. But he was a special and very talented musician; that much is clear.
