Director Phil Grabsky sheds light on the life of composer Beethoven through his oeuvre. He places each composition chronologically in Beethoven's biography with the aid of letter quotes and undertakes a musical quest. In Cologne, Bonn, Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna and other cities he goes in search of the real Ludwig van Beethoven. No other composer has been quoted, painted, described and used so often for political and revolutionary purposes (ranging from Marxism to Fascism), but who was the real Beethoven? Who was the man behind the romantic image of the tormented artist with his wild hair, perverse character and furrowed eyebrows? And what has immortalized Beethoven's music and image? In "In Search of Beethoven" the greatest musicians and Beethoven experts in the world have their say. Their visions give a new perspective on the legendary composer.
