In Groove We Trust plot

How do funky machismo and buddhism go together in one man? This music documentary takes you into the groove of Joseph Bowie, with his band Defunkt one of the great innovators in the history of jazz funk. Bowie is a man of great contrasts. In his music he unites avant-garde with tradition. His band is an (impossible) mix of total freedom and strict discipline. He fights his heavy heroin addiction by practicing Nichiren Buddhism. He longs for commercial success but makes no concessions to his artistic principles. Contrasts that lead to exciting music and a rich life, but not always to social success. Not only Bowie himself is in the picture. In the film, a chorus of people involved who represent a special world performs. Mostly jazz musicians, who participate in Bowie's struggle in their own way.
