In een Japanse Stroomversnelling plot
At the beginning of this documentary, Willem-Alexander addresses the De Rijke symposium in Osaka on water management. Just like Van Doorn, Escher and Lindo, the name De Rijke is famous in Japan. In the nineteenth century, these Dutch engineers came to Japan to improve the waterways, because of the poor infrastructure and the danger of flooding. The men forgotten in the Netherlands in Japan are still highly praised for their work, for example with a play, a park, and even a replica of a grave located in the Netherlands. Director Louis van Gasteren illustrates passages from Dutch letters home with current images of the aforementioned locations, where Japanese people reverently explain. Archive material is combined with fragments from the Japanese, Dutch-spoken feature film Ver Weg, about the personal lives of the engineers.
