The old doctor who manages a remote psychiatric hospital in Siberia and who takes the viewer as Dantes Virgil not through hell, but along the halls and corridors of the building, wonders: “Where does the human soul reside? In the heart? In the brain? Or perhaps elsewhere?” He sighs that it is a great mystery. The mystification of soul and mental illness that the Polish director Wojciech Kasperski draws from his mouth contrasts sharply with the daily routine in the building where the staff tries to do the work with minimal resources. The doctor states that he knows soon after arrival whether new people will ever leave the institute. It's an overcrowded place, where tying up seems to be the only solution if the medication doesn't work.
