The extinct Bulgarian village on the border with Turkey, known for centuries as 'The Great Gate', has just 38 voters. With the elections approaching, several candidates are running for mayor. Among them postman Ivan. He has devised a plan that is as sympathetic as it is remarkable to revive his village. Refugees have entered Europe through this 'gate' since the Roman and Ottoman Empires. So why not offer the now passing Syrian refugees a home and a fresh start in the empty village? There is no room for refugees in the program of his biggest opponent. And what the current mayor thinks about this theme is not entirely clear. The three are followed throughout their campaign, with only a handful of oldies offering a sympathetic ear. This creates a tragicomic portrait of a sleepy hamlet that suddenly finds itself in the middle of current events.
