Hubert Vos en de Keizerin plot
Documentary that links the making of a portrait in 1905 of the Chinese Empress Cixi by the Limburger Hubert Vos to the restoration more than a century later of the same portrait by a group of Limburg restorers. The cultural differences between the Netherlands and China are still just as great a hundred years later. Hubert Vos, a naturalized American, was asked to make a portrait of the Chinese empress. He was immediately impressed by the 72-year-old woman, who was known for being extremely cruel. In just four sessions, he had the opportunity to sketch her. Because she made it clear to him that she did not want a portrait, but a monument, he painted her when she was thirty. Actor Johan Leysen reads the notes that Vos made in voice-over. Parallel to this we see the process of restoration of the canvas, which had to be considered almost lost after a century in a draughty unheated room. The restorers appear to encounter the same difficulties as Vos in his day, so it remains exciting whether they will be able to finish their work.
