Het Nieuwe Artis plot

Artis, the oldest zoo in the Netherlands, represents the most radical innovation in its 178-year existence. The inspired director has a clear mission – but doesn't he threaten to outrun himself, his employees and his animals? Documentary maker Willemiek Kluijfhout followed the caretakers, designers, management and above all: the animals themselves for over a year. About the long-awaited birth of an elephant calf, the construction of a spectacular new elephant enclosure, sharp discussions about the roles of humans, animals, plants and microbes, and about the fences that should stop people rather than animals.
