Herr Schmidt und Herr Friedrich plot

Messrs Schmidt and Friedrich have been in a relationship for twenty-four years. After the love for German Schlager music brought them together and even the Berlin Wall could not prevent their being together, they now live in the city of Gronau, just across the border with our country. Both are unemployed. The film looks back on their adventures, especially through photos and letters that show their longing for each other. In their living room they play their beloved records: schlagers from the fifties and sixties, with heartbreaking lyrics full of hope for a better future. Their modest, if not to say, inhibited interaction with each other is striking: a small kiss on the birthday is sufficient. Their chuckles are endearing. Yet both gentlemen seem to live more in the absolutely more romantic past than in the somewhat dull and bourgeois Gronau. Their feeling is in the music.
